The Shinano River (367km), the longest river in Japan, has been troubled from ancient times by floods.

The 10km long Ohkouzu-Bunsuiro(waterway), completed in 1924, was built to protect a grain area downstream of the Shinano River from floods.

As for the 2km near to the sea, there are hills of around 100m in height, so a huge excavation resembling the Panama Canal was performed.
It is calm weather today, but I heard the flow quantity during heavy rain is intensely, and the riverbed of the river mouth was dug to a depth more than 15m.
In 2000, the second generation Araizeki was completed. This water gate controls quantity to the main stream of the Shinano River .90.5Km/Total 7h
