Karuizawa is the best summer resort in Japan.
The Canadian missionary Alexander Croft Shaw discovered it in 1886, and many Westerners built villas here in order to avoid the hot and humid Japanese summers. John Lennon spent several summers here in his later years.
I got off at Yokokawa Station, set up my bicycle, and cycled to the Usui mountain pass today. As I approached the mountain pass, temperature dropped slowly and refreshing air is filling.
Because I've been here many times, I took a longer route and cycled along the slope to Kumano Shrine.
There is a mountain pass at old Nakasendo, built during the Edo era, and here the boundary line between Nagano and Gunma goes straight through the center of the Shrine House.

Some old buildings still remain in Karuizawa.
Mikasa Hotel 1905, "Important Cultural Properties".
Kita Karuizawa Station 1930, "Registered Tangible Cultural Properties".
